The festival falls today )June 6th, 2024). As per Hindu religious literature - Panchang- it is observed on the Amavasya Tithi (new moon day), considered crucial for the observance, beginning at 7:54 PM on June 5 and ends on June 6 at 6:07 PM.
Vat Savitri festival is described as a significant Hindu festival and holds deep cultural and spiritual importance among married women.
Those married women who participate and perform prescribed rituals on this day,pray for the long life of their husband.
They observe fast and offer prayers by moving around the vat tree, each in washed clothes and dashing vermillion powder- Sindoor which represents years of ancient folklore and beliefs about validation as a married woman.
The dash of vermilion powder on her forehead is her holiest mark as she begins her journey as a bride, for the rest of her life.By observing Vat Savitri, these women seeks the longevity, health, and prosperity of their husbands.
Records revealed that the name Vat Savitri comes from a woman of Savitri who had tricked Lord Yama, the lord of death, and compelled him to return the life of her husband Satyawan.
Savitri’s unwavering love and determination compelled Yama to grant her wish, thereby symbolizing the power of love and the strength of a woman's devotion, as per reports published by livemint.com.
