Two points of governance indicate that Hemant Soren can regain the post of Chief Minister again before the Independence Day August 15. 

One, sudden cancellation of the event in Ranchi where appointment letters were to be handed over to more than 1,500 selected teachers by Chief Minister Champai Soren on Tuesday. 

Two,Alamgir Alam, who was arrested and jailed in the money laundering case slapped on him by the Enforcement Directorate, had quit as Rural Development Minister on June 10.

The post of Rural Development Minister remains vacant. Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren has put on hold the appointment of Rural Development Minister and did not hand over appointment letters to selected teachers. 

These affairs of governance were not without any reason. The Assembly polls in the state are expected to be held during - November- January,2024. 

The national flag is unfurled on the Independence Day on August 15 and the foundation day of the state of Jharkhand is slated to be held on November 15.Both events hold importance for the Chief Minister.

For the ruling JMM, the star campaigner is Hemant Soren. Against this backdrop, Hemant Soren’s return as the CM can help the JMM deal with electoral goals unitedly.

In case, Hemant Soren heads the party and Champai Soren continued as the CM,there can be “ dual power centres”. Aware of it, Hemant Soren is understood to have a plan to portray ‘unity’ within the party JMM and government. 

Also, insiders of JMM headed by Hemant Soren Champai Soren say, Champai Soren has performed his role well during “ Vanwas” ( during -arrest and resignation of Hemant Soren - January 31 and grant of bail by the Jharkhand High Court on June 28).

In the recently held Lok Sabha polls 2024,JMM had won three of 5 ( Total 14 seats)Schedule Tribe Reserve Lok Sabha seats it had contested as part of the I.N.D.I.A. Block.  

The jail term of Hemant Soren boomeranged against the BJP led by PM Narendra Modi as the JMM played the “ victim card” and gained sympathy among Adivasi community. Jharkhand Assembly has the 81 Assembly seats. Among them, 28 are ST-reserved seats. 

The JMM can be aiming to make the most of the 28 seats it had won in last assembly poll 2019. Right now, the transition may not be smooth.Hemant Soren may face opposition from among supporters of Champai Soren. 

A move is learnt to be afoot within the senior Shibu Soren family to mobilise Champai Soren to stand up sportingly and invite Hemant Soren to succeed him as the CM like “ Brother Bharat did for Lord Ram”.
