Far away from Jharkhand is Punjab where two persons from the former state were arrested today on charges of supplying and possessing illegal narcotic -opium.

Opium is one of the oldest recreational and medicinal drugs in the world.It’s sell and purchase is regulated by the government. In black market it’s price is always high.

Extracted from the unripe pods of the poppy flower, opium serves as the raw material for production of numerous drugs, both legal( morphine,codeine, hydro morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, etc. and illegal heroin.

In exterior forest areas of Jharkhand, opium is cultivated illegally and several gangs operate to supply opium across the country including Punjab, revealed investigations by the Punjab police.

Their arrest was made on tip off by Punjab’s Zirakpur police of Mohali district. The Punjab police seized 12 kg opium from their possession. 

“The accused used to bring opium from Jharkhand and supply the contraband in Zirakpur, Chandigarh and Mohali”, said the police.

The arrested were identified as Rajinder Kumar, a Zirakpur resident and Afzal Khan, a resident of Jharkhand.

A police team led by sub-inspector Baljinder Kaur had received a tip-off that the accused were coming to Mohali to supply opium to their clients. 

The police arrested the accused near old Lucky Dhaba and upon checking their car, 12 kg opium was recovered from them.
